Experience Is Compression.

Experience Is Compression.

Experience is often described as knowing more.

I think it is also about needing less.

Earlier in a career, you may need ten references to understand a problem.

I think it is also about needing less.

Later, one detail can be enough.

You recognise the pattern.

You have seen the meeting before.
The brief before.
The mistake before.
The client concern before.

That doesn’t mean experienced people are always right.

It means they can often identify the shape of a problem faster.

Experience compresses learning.

It turns many past situations into a quicker judgement.

The danger is becoming too certain.

Experience can create shortcuts, but shortcuts can become assumptions.

So the useful combination is experience plus curiosity.

Know what you have seen before.

But stay open to the possibility that this time is different.

That is probably what keeps experience useful.
